Ilyasu Musa Kwankwaso, the All Progressives Congress (APC) head in Kano State, has asked northern leaders and politicians to support President Bola Tinubu’s reelection campaign in 2027.
He stressed the strategic advantage of capturing the North’s presidency in 2031.

Kwankwaso contended that supporting Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima would ensure a smoother transition of power back to the North following the president’s second term.

Speaking to reporters in Kano on Sunday, Kwankwaso expressed alarm about divisive activities and critiques of President Tinubu by certain elements in the North, describing these attempts as harmful to the region’s long-term interests.

“Patriotic northern politicians must not heed the voices calling for alternative candidates from the South,” Kwankwaso made clear. “If another candidate wins in 2027, the North may face an extended eight-year wait for power to return.”

Kwankwaso disputed the notion that the country’s existing security concerns should discourage support for Tinubu.

He recognized the president’s continuous efforts to combat armed banditry and instability, notably in the North.

Kwankwaso appealed for unity, praising Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle’s recent progress in combating banditry in the North and Northwest and asking northern lawmakers to support Tinubu’s administration.

In response to rumors that former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso could run as a vice-presidential candidate alongside a Southern leader, he warned against doing so, stating that it would delay the return of power to the North until 2035.

He closed by encouraging northerners to support Tinubu, saying, “The best assistance we can give President Tinubu is to rally around him with our prayers and efforts to achieve peace in the country.”
