President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of minors imprisoned in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protests, following widespread outcry over their treatment.
Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer who represents the minors, has announced intentions to seek compensation and educational support for the jailed children.
“The president has directed the immediate release of all minors,” Minister of Information Mohammed Idris told reporters.
The directive, however, does not interfere with ongoing judicial proceedings. Idris added that a committee formed by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs will look into the facts surrounding the arrests. “Any government officer found culpable will face disciplinary action,” he said.
The youngsters are among 76 suspects charged with treasonable crime for their participation in the protests, which took place between August 1 and 10.
Last Monday, the Federal High Court in Abuja issued them a bail bond of N10 million each, but they were jailed pending the completion of bail terms.
The presence of young detainees in court drew widespread outrage and calls for quick action.

Following the president’s decision, Falana announced his intention to seek more compensation, highlighting the youngsters’ educational needs.
“We will wait until the matter is withdrawn,” added the minister. “We then plan to apply for compensation to cover their education through at least senior secondary school.”
Falana’s planned application is based on a number of legislative legislation, including Section 18 of the 1999 Constitution and the Child’s Rights Act, which requires child justice proceedings for juvenile matters.
