A Nigerian man named Johnson has been arrested in Delhi for allegedly defrauding an Indian woman from Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, by creating a fraudulent matrimonial profile and promising her marriage. The Rajnandgaon police detained Johnson, who is accused of swindling the victim out of lakhs of rupees under the guise of a romantic relationship as reported by Vanguard News.

Authorities reported that Johnson had been living clandestinely in Delhi even after his visa and passport had expired. The police indicated that he had set up a fake profile on a matrimonial website where the victim’s own profile was also active.

Initially, Johnson caught the woman’s attention by portraying himself as a businessman based in the UK, claiming he was planning to expand his business operations to India. He soon established communication with the woman through an accomplice, who falsely informed her that Johnson was stranded at the Delhi airport and required funds to convert his UK currency.

Rahul Dev Sharma, the Additional Superintendent of Police in Rajnandgaon, explained that Johnson blackmailed the woman, ultimately cheating her out of ₹15,72,000 (approximately ₦9,100,000) with the assistance of his accomplice. After the victim attempted to reach Johnson by phone, she discovered that his number was turned off, leading her to realize that she had been scammed.

Feeling deceived, the woman filed a fraud complaint with the Dongargarh Police cyber cell. In response, the police initiated an investigation based on her report. With the help of cybercrime experts, they traced Johnson’s location to Delhi. Subsequently, a police team conducted a raid on his residence in Delhi and arrested him.

According to police reports, Johnson, who is approximately 40 years old, has a history of defrauding multiple women. Authorities are currently working to obtain further information through interrogation. In the course of the arrest, police recovered a laptop and four mobile phones from Johnson, and his bank account has been frozen as part of the investigation.
