Abdulkarim Lawan, the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, has asserted that the “faulty” presidential aircraft that Nigeria’s vice president, Kashim Shettima, travels in puts his life at danger.

An incident at a U.S. airport in New York forced Shettima to postpone his departure to the Commonwealth Summit in Samoa. The trip to Samoa is canceled by Nigeria’s Vice President Shettima after a foreign object strikes an aircraft on October 25, 2024.

A “foreign object” struck his aircraft while it was making a stopover at JFK Airport in New York, according to confirmation from the Presidency.

A few aircraft components, including the cockpit windscreen, sustained damage in the collision.

In a statement released on Sunday in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, Lawan requested that the Nigerian government buy Shettima a new jet.

He expressed his condolences to the Nigerian government, specifically the vice president’s office, his crew, and his employees, for the tragic events at JFK Airport in New York, USA.

“I also want to thank Allah (God) for saving the lives of our beloved Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima and everyone on board the unfortunate VP’s plane. At the same time, I urge the Nigerian government to demand that the United States government conduct a thorough and prompt investigation into the incident that affected Vice President Kashim Shettima’s plane at one of the most secure locations in the world.”

When the vice president uses the outdated and malfunctioning presidential aircraft, his life and the lives of his officials and crew are in danger.

In order to prevent these air accidents from happening again, Senator Kashim Shettima urgently needs to purchase a new aircraft.
