The Lagos state police Commissioner of Police CP Olarewaju Ishola has expressed concern about the online dating tricks some dubious men are employing to lure ladies to be robbed.
The Lagos state police boss who exposed the modus operandi of the perpetrators during a press conference on Saturday said no fewer than sixteen of such cases had been bursted since assumption of office, adding that a recent case was that of a 14 year old girl who was ‘abducted’ by her boyfriend and contacts were made to her parents for money. He said the parents of the girl who is now pregnant, were actually sending money demanded to the ‘abductor’ until they decided to contact the police following which both the girl and her abductor were arrested. He said, “Ladies and gentlemen of the press, I will like to say that to the glory of God that throughout September 2024 when I came into the picture as CP Lagos, there has not been any reported cases of bank robbery in the state because all the measures put n place yielded good fruits. I want to tell us that some of the kidnap cases that are celebrated in the media that we going into are not real kidnap in the real sense of it, they ‘constructive kidnap’. Constructive in the sense that you are a lady, a group of boys will lure you to Lagos, book first class ticket for you, sent you N500,000.00 as pocket money, lodge you in one of the five star hotels and you are happy that you have arrived not knowing it is just a bait. I have rescued not less than 16 ladies in such circumstances. No soon they arrived, they’ll mess them up, collect their phones, transfer all their money to their own account and get in touch with their relatives that they have been kidnapped for more money otherwise they’ll kill them.
It is constructive in the sense that they walked themselves to the traps set for them but we are only a step ahead of them. I have a case of abduction of a 14 year girl supposedly by her boyfriend already pregnant. She made series of contacts to her parents that she had been kidnapped for money and they were sending. We apprehended yesterday night. We have it as a promise that the Lagos State Police Command under my watch and under the directives of the IGP Kayode Egbetokun, we want to enjoined you as pressman to do your work diligently in line either the best practices in the world.
