An entire family, husband, wife and their three children, who were relocating to the UK, were among the 241 lives lost in Thursday’s devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.
The family was en route to London when Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, exploded just 32 seconds after takeoff.
Dr Komi Vyas, a medical doctor who recently quit her job at a hospital in Udaipur, was relocating to the UK with her husband,
Dr Prateek Joshi and their children – twin boys Nakul and Pradyut, 5, and daughter Miraya, 8,
“Komi had quit her job recently to join her husband in London,” a spokesperson from Pacific Hospital in Udaipur confirmed.
“Prateek had come here just two days ago to take his wife and children with him,” said cousin Nayan Joshi.
A smiling selfie taken moments before takeoff now haunts loved ones. The photo shows the couple across the aisle from their three kids, capturing what should have been a new beginning.
Instead, the aircraft reportedly lost power or lift, plunging to the ground in a fiery blast.
“The take-off was perfect… just short of taking the gear up, the aircraft started descending,” said Capt Saurabh Bhatnagar, a former senior pilot.
Of the 242 onboard, only one survivor has been confirmed: 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British-Indian national.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow on X:
“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words.”
