According to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, the government has not formally communicated with them about their ongoing strike.

In response to four months of unpaid salaries, the JAC of SSANU and NASU declared an indefinite strike on Monday, thus suspending university operations across the country.

“There is no update on the ongoing strike; it continues,” stated Abdussobur Salaam, the National Vice-President of SSANU, in an interview on Tuesday evening. Our union executives and the state minister of education had some informal meetings, but nothing substantial has come of them—just a casual appeal.

“Repeated pledges that have not been kept have contributed to this problem’s long-term persistence. We still haven’t gotten any money, and all of our ultimatums have passed.

“The most recent invitation was just a casual phone call. We have come too far and can no longer tolerate hollow promises, so we implore the authorities to act decisively. We will not give up even if we do not get paid.
The ultimatum provided to the Federal Government about the withheld salaries ended at midnight on Sunday, according to a statement released on Sunday and signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, the general secretary of NASU, and Mohammed Ibrahim, the national president of SSANU.

Among other things, the unions are calling for the implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government, better compensation, earned allowances, and the payment of the four months’ withheld earnings.
