Nigerian Navy to establish special operations base in Benue
The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Tuesday, announced plans to establish a Special Operations Command unit in Benue state.
The announcement was made during a visit to Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia at the Government House in Makurdi, Benue state capital.
The Nigerian Navy’s decision to establish a presence in Benue dtate is aimed at tackling insecurity in the region through strategic collaboration and development-focused security operations.
The Special Operations Command unit will be located along the state’s riverbanks and will operate beyond coastal waters to inland waterways and land-based support.

Governor Alia welcomed the naval chief’s visit, describing it as timely amid ongoing security challenges in the state.
He emphasised that the threat to lives and farmlands is a national crisis with direct implications for food security, particularly in a state known as Nigeria’s food basket.
The governor thanked the CNS for swiftly responding to the state’s distress and granting the request for a Special Unit Command.
He pledged full logistical support to fast-track its activation and assured the Navy of continued partnership, including efforts to improve site accessibility and further collaboration on long-term peacebuilding.
The visit was attended by several stakeholders, including the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly and heads of security apparatuses in the state.
The occasion culminated in a site inspection, which is located at the North Bank area of Makurdi.
The establishment of the Special Operations Command unit is expected to enhance security in Benue state and prevent further attacks on lives and property.
