The peaceful farming community of Ilewo Orile in Abeokuta North, Ogun State, was shaken by tragedy on Wednesday when a 29-year-old mother, Mrs. Gloria Peter Ajine, was brutally murdered while harvesting vegetables on her farm.
Gloria, known for her hard work and devotion to her family, had gone to her farm that afternoon to gather produce for the market. Tragically, she never returned home.
Her husband, Mr. Peter Ajine, recounted the discovery of her lifeless body in a pool of blood, describing the attack as an unimaginable loss. “Gloria was the light of our family. She didn’t deserve to die like this,” he said, holding their one-year-old child.
Gloria was a native of Benue State, born into the Ochong family of Adum East Ito in Obi Local Government Area. After marrying into the Ajine family of Abofutu Ikponyire, she and her husband relocated to Ogun State in search of a better life.
Peter described his wife as a loving, hardworking woman with dreams for her family. “She went to the farm to provide for us, but she never came back. Whoever did this has taken my joy away. I will not rest until justice is served,” he said.
The family has called on law enforcement to launch a thorough investigation and apprehend the killers. “We need to know why this happened. Gloria had no enemies. She was a good woman,” Peter pleaded.
Residents of Ilewo Orile have expressed disbelief over the crime, which they described as a rare occurrence in their area.
“Gloria was always smiling and hardworking. We can’t believe someone would do this to her,” said a neighbor, Mrs. Rukayat Oladimeji. Another resident, Mr. Gbenga Adewale, added, “This tragedy has left everyone afraid. The police must act quickly to protect us.”
The Ajine and Ochong families have released a joint statement condemning the act and demanding justice. “This murder is not just a family tragedy but a societal one. We urge the Ogun State Police to ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” the statement read.
Civil society organizations, including the Human Rights Advocacy Watch Campaign (HRAWC) and the All Nigerian Women League (NWJL), have also condemned the act. “This killing reflects the failure to protect vulnerable citizens, especially women in rural areas,” their statement read.
The Ogun State Police Command has yet to provide detailed updates on the case. When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola assured the public that investigations are ongoing.
